LINDY BOUSTEDT DIRECTOR/ PRODUCER

Why make movies?

Our greatest need as humans is to feel like we’re not alone in this world. We crave knowing that somewhere, there is someone out there that gets us. I make movies to let others know they’re not alone. In turn I get to connect with our film’s audiences and feel like there are others out there who resonate with the issues/thoughts/characters/stories that I do.

In short, I make movies to connect with others.

What experience in your life outside of the film industry has been most helpful as a producer?

My business degree and my years working in retail management and bank management. Learning how to manage people, time, and money is incredibly helpful. I’d say my time working in event management has also been useful. Very close cousin to film producing.

What was the first film that you produced?

My husband Kris and I wrote/produced/directed the film together as we do all our films. Our first short film was COLLECT ALL FOUR. We made it right out of college in 2006. It was the first film we ever had play at the Seattle International Film Festival and it’s the only film I’ve acted in. After seeing my face on the giant screen at The Egyptian theater, I knew I should stay behind the camera and leave the acting to the professionals.

What are your top three favorite movies and how did they inspire you?

This is a really hard question to answer. There are so many movies that inspire me! I'll try and pick three that inspired me to make my features.

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS (1995) - this movie changed me as a young adult. First time I ever saw a plus size woman, who looked like me, as the lead character and winning the boy without losing weight or changing who she was. It changed my life and was a big reason I wrote about my own life for our first feature film PERFECT 10.

MOONLIGHT MILE (2002) - this movie is one I watch over and over again. I love the characters, the setting, the pace, the acting, the score, everything about this film. Seeing flawed, layered, real characters grow and help each other become better versions of themselves is what drives me to tell stories. Big influence in the writing/crafting of our second feature THIS IS OURS.

THE INNKEEPERS (2001) - this movie gave me courage to attempt making a film in the horror/thriller genre. I love how really it's a character piece wrapped in a horror film. I love the simplicity of it all yet how rich the characters are. HUGE inspiration for the writing/crafting of our third feature BRIDES TO BE.

Where do your movie ideas come from?

A lot of our ideas come from life. Themes/characters that are important to us and we want to explore them more. Since independent film is such a long and difficult road, our stories have to resonate with our souls, our core. That way when the road gets tough, we’re inspired by our stories to keep us going because they mean so much to us.

Here's a fantastic interview that I found from UW TV

What are some of your current projects?

We just finished post-production on our third feature film BRIDES TO BE. I also recently completed production on a new TV sci-fi/fantasy pilot that I produced called STROWLERS.

What does it take to be a successful female film producer?

It takes tenacity, determination, passion, mad crazy juggling skillz, the ability to collaborate, and loving to surround yourself with those more knowledgeable/talented than you are. Then, understanding what makes a compelling story, knowing who your audience is, how to find them, and how to reach them.

Do you feel that the idea of filmmaking as a male dominated arena has affected your opportunities?

I wish I could say it hasn’t but how can it not? Even if you don’t know how it’s hampering or affecting your opportunities, it is. But filmmaking on an independent scale is full of huge obstacles to overcome every step of the way. Especially when you make films featuring feminine stories – despite whether or not you’re a woman behind the camera.

But every obstacle, every time we’re told no one wants to watch these stories or pay for these stories, it only makes us more determined. Nothing is going to stop us from doing what we love.

What has been your most challenging project to date?

All of them are challenging for different reasons! You think that next time, you’ll make it so it’s easier cause you’ve learned what not to do. You only end up facing new challenges you never saw coming.

What advice can you offer to women who are breaking into the industry?

Know why you want to do what you want to do and what fuels that passion. You’ll need to remind yourself a lot along the way. And allow yourself to take a break every once in a while and reconnect with what inspires you. If you don’t take the time to recharge, you’ll quickly burn out.

Surround yourself with those who inspire you and challenge you. Build a community and find ways to redefine success on your terms. Support your community and let them support you. Don’t wait for anyone to give you permission to follow your dreams.
